Magnetic field
day
An enormous magnetic loop filled with glowing hot
gas lifts off the sun in this image captured by the Solar and Heliospheric
Observatory and released by NASA on June 9,
2002. Such so-called prominences are
caused by explosive instabilities within the sun's tangled magnetic field. This
one stretches about 50 Earth-diameters from one end to the other.
